FOCUS through FUN
 Has Proven Improvement

Beginning in July 2004, six months after starting with our first student, FTF began using a nationally standardized rating scale known as the BASC Monitor for ADHD to help determine the effectiveness of the FTF program. There is a BASC Monitor for ADHD for the Parents (46 items) and one for the Teachers (47 items). These rating scales were developed specifically to monitor “ongoing outcomes” for children receiving treatment for ADHD.  When the BASC is scored, it divides the items into 4 Categories: Our goal was to have parents and teachers of FTF students fill out these forms on a regular basis, approximately monthly. The first ratings were obtained from parents of children who had begun doing the FTF program during the prior 6 months. After that, virtually every parent filled out their first BASC as their children were starting the program.

WHAT ABOUT FOCUS through FUN for ADULTS?

We have had only a few real adult clients who have done the FOCUS Through FUN program.

Most of them had an ADHD history and were having these problems now.

Unfortunately we did not collect appropriate data on most of these adults,

But after very few sessions, usually around 10,

Every adult told us amazing positive stories about how their life has changed so well.

So many adults said they say “Play Attention” to themselves

When they doing work, doing sports, and even when driving in difficult situations.

They said this helped them turn on their excellent focus so well.

We also had one of the adult who had a brain injury as a child and

He chose to do some Play Attention and a lot of BrainTrain activity,

Particularly Captain’s Log, to improve his focus, listening and looking skills.

We have heard so many positive changes from him. Very impressive!

Since Play Attention was developed from programs for astronauts and pilots,

It may help a ton of adults going forward

PARENT BASC RESULTS for FTF STUDENTS WHO HAD or DID NOT HAVE ADDITIONAL IBH SERVICES 2004-2008

KK EVALUATIONS: Dr. Kaufman meets with the parents in the first session, then meets one-on-one with the child in the second session. Then in a double session, the parents observe their child doing an activity known as the IVA Plus, which determines whether the child qualifies as ADHD. Then Dr. Kaufman spends a session with the parents reviewing the data and the observations they had to help determine what treatments their child needs. 66 of 128 of the FTF students were evaluated by Dr. Kaufman, typically before doing FTF. The average age at the FTF start was 9. The average number of FTF sessions they have had was 25.3

CALM PARENTING GROUP: Dr. Kaufman conducts 12-session groups for parents to help their child make the decision to be so cooperative. They are taught to be so precise and so nice to their kids. 28of 128 of the FTF students had parent(s) in Dr. Kaufman’s Calm Parenting Group while they were doing FTF. The average age at the FTF start was 8.The average FTF sessions they did was 30

SOCIAL SKILLS GROUPS: Psychologists and Social Workers run weekly groups that help kids learn and practice appropriate behaviors that help make new friends and get along with existing friends. 21of 128 of the FTF students did IBH Social Skills Groups while they were doing FTF. The average age at the FTF start was 9.The average number of FTF sessions they have had was 29

KFK INDIVIDUAL TENSION/ATTENTION SESSIONS: Dr. Kaufman helps them learn Self-Calming Skills, including slow and deep breathing as well as Positive Thoughts in individual or family sessions. 49 of 128 of the FTF students were given this while they were doing FTF.  The average age at the FTF start was 9. The average number of FTF sessions they have had was 25.3

NO OTHER SERVICES AT IBH or MEDS: 26 of 128 of the FTF students did not do Individual T/At Therapy, Social Skills Groups, and did not have their parents learn Calm Parenting Skills by Dr. Kaufman while they were doing FTF. They were not on medication either. The average age at the FTF start was 8. The average FTF sessions they have had was 28.8

HOW DO MEDICATIONS EFFECT FTF STUDENTS?
FTF STUDENTS NOT ON MEDICATION vs. STUDENTS ON MEDICATION(S)

A very frequent question we are asked is whether medication makes a difference for kids doing our program. 84 students have not been on medication during their participation in FOCUS through FUN. They have Parent BASC Ratings between an average of 26 sessions.

44 students have been on medication. 25 FTF students had their first parent ratings when “on medication” and sustained their medications throughout the ratings times on the program. Some had medication changes. 18 FTF students started medicine after their first rating. Their average starting scores were often worse but their progress(in 24 sessions) was frequently better.
